5 gen 1919 anni - Spartacist Revolt
Descrizione:
The Spartacist revolt was an armed revolt made by the left wing
There were many protests of the government that had taken over in November and on the 4th January Ebert fired Eichhorn from the position of chief of police in Berlin following his refusal to act against a protest occurring at christmas.
However this was met with its own protests. By this point the Spartacist league had formed its own communist party (KPD) and they formed a large part of the protest (led by Liebknecht and Luxembourg), joined by rebel soldiers.. They called for a general strike and many workers joined their protest - which was quite heavily armed. They formed a revolutionary council but after the USPD members tried to engage in talks with Ebert, the Spartacist league called on its members to take over with force.
And they did so, Ebert commissioned the army and Freikorps (right wing vigilante groups of mostly ex-soldiers and armed with ww1 equipment) to put down the revolt quickly (he was anxious to avoid a similar situation to the Russian revolution). They did so after bitter fighting with 150-200 Spartacist and 17 Freikorps deaths.
The Freikorps executed Liebknecht and Luxembourg.
Similar uprisings occurred across Germany with rebels setting up Soviets in Bavaria, Saxony and Bremen etc but these were also put down.
