Purkinje conducted a series of lectures at Prague in 1837. He reported on his observations on the structure of the gastric glands, neurological system, and so on in them. Clear photographs of several cells from animal tissues were provided in a table connected to his article. Purkinje, however, was unable to establish the homology (comparability) of plant and animal cells: first, by grains he understood now cells, now cell nuclei; second, the term "cell" was then regarded literally as "space enclosed by walls."
Purkinje compared plant cells and animal "seeds" based on analogy rather than similarity of these structures (understanding the terms "analogy" and "homology" in the modern sense).
