St. Jerome, commissioned by Pope Damasus, translated and compiled what became known as the Vulgate Bible, the source of the authoritative Christian bible still used and translated today. Before the Vulgate, Latin versions of the originally Hebrew>Greek text circulated in the first and second century but saw little agreement.
