73 seconds into the launch in Cape canaveral, Florida, the U.S. space shuttle Challenger broke apart, killing all seven crew members on live television. On the night before launch, Florida was swept under a rush of cold temperatures and ice, including on the launch pad. This caused disturbances with the rocket booster causing ‘joint rotation’ that let out gas and exhaust. On the day of the launch, take off was postponed until 11:38. Everything seemed to be normal until the shuttle disappeared by being engulfed with smoke and flames, collapsing a minute and 13 seconds into departure. All the crew members died in this tragedy including a well known teacher named Christa McAulffie. The debris fell into the Atlantic ocean. Investigations commenced with NASA and other commissioned professionals such as Neil Armstrong. They came to the conclusion that the heads of this mission swept minor things under the rug, thinking that the ship would be able to survive throughout takeoff and landing. The final cause was the severe cold sweep in Florida the night before, which caused loosenings and rotation in some of the rocket boosters that led to a leak, and the final explosion. This was a tragedy witnessed by thousands and caused ripples throughout NASA's research due to budgetary effects. All seven crew members died and this failure of a space mission really put things into perspective for everyone.
