3 nov 1957 anni - First mammal in orbit
Descrizione:
On this day, Laika the dog was released into space, becoming the world's first animal in orbit. She was launched on a Russian Sputnik ship. There were no plans for her return to home, as humans had not yet developed that technology. Unfortunately, she died while in orbit due to overheating and asphyxiation. No one knew about her true cause of death until circa 2002, before that it was disclosed that she ran out of oxygen on around day 6 of the flight. She was taken off the streets in Russia and put into a three day training program prior to the flight. Scientists had planned to poison her after landing if she didn’t already die during spaceflight. Scientists knew that survival of humans in orbit would be highly unexpected, so they deemed animal testing ‘necesarry’ for the future of human spaceflight. When taking off, it was reported that her heart rate rose three times than the average and quadrupled with her breath. This was groundbreaking, as Russia successfully launched a ship into earth's orbit for the second time, but they also willingly sacrificed an innocent dog's life.
