7 gen 1770 anni - The Boston Massacre
Descrizione:
In Boston in the late 1760s, the signs of what later became the American Revolution began first with residents who eventually became irritated by the heavy taxation they were subjected to. With the Townshend Act of 1767, the British began taxing imported goods, including glass, lead, ink, paper, and tea. To comply with the laws, they imposed a strong military presence for the Massachusetts colonists which exacerbated tensions between the local population and the crown representatives. On March 5, 1770, British officers on the pretext of guarding the Boston customs house were surrounded by noisy Bostonians Linga strong-packed snowballs. The small group of soldiers lost control when one of their regiment was hit. Despite explicit orders to the contrary, they ended up firing into a crowd of civilians, killing three and wounding eight others, two of them seriously. This sensationalist portrait of the scouts was recorded, printed, and sold by future Revolutionary War hero Paul Revere. Revere copied the print from a drawing by Henry Pelham for an engraving later published under the title "The Fruits of Arbitrary Power, or the Bloody Massacre. "Revere's engraving appeared around March 28, 1770. Among those wounded in the massacre was African-American sailor Crispus Attucks.
