Phoenicians invented the alphabet. The term alphabet was derived from the first two letters of the Phoenician alphabet, aleph and beth. Their system of writing reached Europe. The Greeks and the Romans adapted it and eventually became the basis of our present writing system. The Phoenician city of Gebal was the exporter of papyrus used by the ancient Egyptians and Greeks in writing. The word bible (Ta Biblia in Greek; The Book) originated from this city’s name. In Greek, Gebal is known as Byblos and papyrus is translated as Bublos.
