At the University of Havana, he became interested in politics, and shortly after (a couple of years, Summer of 1947) he participated in an invasion of the Dominican Republic (which was aborted). After the mission was aborted, Castro escaped and swam across the Bay of Nipe (infested with sharks) holding a submachine gun and a pistol.
