This was a march through Georgia where William Tecumseh Sherman and his soldiers tore down and killed everything they found. They marched from Atlanta to Savannah from Nov 15 to Dec 21. A famous quote of Sherman's is, "War is cruelty. There is no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over."
