Louis XIV, the "Sun King" of France, renounced the established edict and declared Protestantism illegal. This damaged France as heavy Protestant persecution was encouraged. This led to many protestants fleeing France to other countries, taking away valuable workers. It also caused dislike of the king among other protestant nations.
