The Panama Canal was built to make it easier and more efficient for ships to go between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The Canal was constructed in Panama because it was the easiest place to build a canal. The French had started building the Panama Canal back in 1881 but were unable to finish it. America took on the project in 1904 and it took 10 years to complete. Thousands of workers helped to build the canal and at one point there were close to 45,000 workers on site. Today, the canal is own by Panama and still plays a major role in trade.
