Beholders lay seige to Akkabbel in the Ithal Pass in Calimshan. The garrison receives reinforcements from Calimport via a magical portal cast by the vizar Ali el Samesaj. In the Battle of the Samesaj Gate, the defenders and reinforcements break the siege as the beholders suffer significant losses. The portal remains intact following the battle, known only to Ali to be keyed to the light of the full moon.

For his efforts, Ali el Samesaj is named Grand Vizar and serves at Syl-Pasha Ruj el Drakhon's side
