1. This was painted at the dawn of the Cultural Revolution. It celebrates Chairman Mao as the leader of the Communist Party and shows him marching towards the coal mines in Anyuan where he organized a nonviolent strike of 13,000 miners and railway workers. This event was important to the Communist Party because it helped gain the support from the common people.
2. The purpose of the painting was for a national exhibition.
3. Most paintings of Mao were used for propaganda which explains why Liu Chunhua portrays him in an idealized fashion, using socialist realism. Showing him standing tall above the mountains with windswept robes and a clenched fist, the painting makes him seem almost superhuman.
