The European Coal and Steel community was born by a general idea that Jean Monnet had, which was that Europe should be rearranged under a confederate commonwealth to take full advantage of mass production and mass consumption.
He then saw the conflicts between France and Germany because of the territories of Ruhr (Ger) and Lorraine (Fra) were most of the Steel and Coal were being produced and extracted. This was a huge conflict, which started when France accused Germany of not being willing to repay its WWI war debt and occupied the Ruhr territory (1923).
Monnet had then the idea to create a common market for the iron, coal and steel sector. The ECSC was then joined by France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Luxembourg and Netherlands.
Jean Monnet became the first president in 1952.
After the creation the ECSC became the largest foreign borrower of Wall Street.
