6 gen 1862 anni - Tarib Songoro begins trading on Ukerewe Island.

Descrizione:

"In 1877, Songoro had an establishment in BuKereve of some eighty persons, which had been started ten to fifteen years earlier. This base enabled Songoro to conduct a twofold operation: to assist Mutesa of BuGanda in moving Ganda ivory across the lake and on to Unyanyembe (Tabora) via Kageyi, and to acquire slaves on his own initiative from the Kavirondo Gulf region for shipment southward (Bennett 1970:214). Songoro's alliance with Kereve rulers enabled him to use their canoes when necessary, as well as their contacts with Ruri elders (Ruri is a generic Kereve term for various people living north of the Jita), who collaborated with him in obtaining captives from their northern Luo neighbors... Although Songoro exported most of his slaves to the south, he apparently gave many to Rukonge as tribute for his residence on the island"
