Little, a prisoner at Beaufort County Jail killed jailer Clarence Alligood when he tried to solicit her for sex and then escaped the jail and hid until support rallied around her and she turned herself in. Defense funds in Durham and Chapel Hill, NC were formed to support her defense. Her attorneys Jerry Paul and Karen Galloway started the “trial of the decade” on July 15, 1975. In July 1975, the jury voted to acquit Little of all charges, a landmark decision.
