The Missouri Compromise was a compromise made in response to the debates over the balance of admitted states into the Union as free or slave. This compromise was written by Henry Clay, and it stated that Maine would be added to the Union as a free state, but Missouri would be added as a slave state in order to stay balanced in the North and South. The Congress established a horizontal border that balanced the slave states and the free states.
