Francis de Orellana and his brother Gonzaleo Pizarro struck east from the city of Quito in Ecuador on a journey into the unknown.Thier mission was nothing less than to find the fabled El Dorado. (America Before, Blz. 137)

Orellana separated with his brother/nephew and went on a search for food (for three or four days). They took the boot and left with fifty seven men. But the current was too strong. This prevented him to return. Since returning wasn’t an option, he chose to follow the river and see what marvels lay ahead. What he didn’t know at the time, was that ahead of him, was the greatest river on earth. They had little food and were starving of hunger. In order to stay alive they ate anything they could. Including chewing there boots. They even hallucinated.
Then, on Monday evening, the eight of January, they heard drums. Orellana landed and nervously walked onto the forest. They were the first Europeans to walk in the interior of Amazonia. He spend months in the Amazon meeting different tribes and people.

Pizarro was still stuck at camp, his men starving. He propably suspected that Orellana left him to find El Dorado for himself.
