The גמרא is essentially a commentary on the משנה. Analyzes and extends the topics reached in the משנה to further clarify הלכות. There are two parallel commentaries on the משנה which are: תלמוד בבלי and תלמוד ירשלמי. Besides regional differences, these commentaries are different in terms of structure and content. תלמוד בבלי is more elaborate and easier to learn, while תלמוד ירושלמי is denser. Today the terms גמרא and תלמוד refer to בבלי, which is extremely commonly learned since our הלכה is dictated from it while ירושלמי is less commonly learned.
