The Dominican War of Independence began when a group known as La Trinitaria gained possession of the stronghold of Puerta del Conde in Santo Domingo after years of secret preparation. This occurred in the Dominican Republic, which is now known as Haiti. Dominicans declared their independence from Haitian dominance.
