The US land a surprise attack and send fleets over to the shore of Iwo Jima. But, once they got there, they faced volcanic ash and high slopes on the shore. After countless hours of being attacked by the Japanese and getting up the mountain, some marines were successful and began crossing the island. The US faced many machine guns shooting at them, but they captured Iwo Jima. This was one hard battle due to the size of the island and the environment, but they figured it out.
