The US wanted to continue to weaken the Axis, by invading them on the shore of Italy. Initially when the Axis found out about it, they weren't going to fight. But, when they came to the realization that they had to defend their territory, they decided to fight. So the Axis moved every troop they could to the shore while the US troops were stationed there. It then became a battle of artillery in order for the US to get into mainland. Eventually they did and they continued to surround the Axis soldiers until they reached Rome. Later, the Ally troops liberated Italy from Axis power.
