Plain Indians believed that Ghost Dances would lead to the disappearance of white settlers, return of the buffalo, and resurrection of dead warriors. Public officials grew alarmed and killed Sitting Bull when attempting to arrest him. As the soldiers unarmed the Sioux, a shot was fired and triggered the death of over 200 Sioux men, women, and children.
