This was the name for the Department of Defense study of U.S. political and military involvement in Vietnam from 1945 to 1967. A member who worked on this project opposed the war. Daniel Ellsberg photocopied all the documents and sent it to The New York times. He then released a series of articles covering the war’s secrets.
The Pentagon Papers revealed a lot of secrets and information that hindered Nixon’s chance for reelection in 1972. A secret White House team called the plumbers tried to prosecute Ellsberg and Anthony Russo. These men later broke in to the Democratic National Committee headquarters which revealed abuses of power by the Nixon administration.
