Te Roopu o te Matakite, led by the then 79-year-old Whina Cooper became one of the most historic moments in Aotearoa. Spurred on by the large scale of loss and sale of Māori land by the government over time, the hīkoi travelled from Te Hāpua in the North and the roopu collected over 60,000 signatures on its movement through the North Island to Wellington.
