Due to the trauma still remaining from colonisation and subsequent land wars, Māori opposition to participation in the War remained.

Despite that, many Māori families enlisted their eldest sons to the cause. By the end of the war in 1945, the 28th Māori Battalion was one of Aotearoa’s most celebrated units.
