On October 9, 2012, the Taliban shot girls rights activist Malala Yousafzai in the head. Malala gained a name for herself when she started speaking out about the Taliban and their denial of girls education. She continued advocating for change and the right for all women to an education which made her a threat to the Taliban. On her way home from school, at the age of 15, Malala’s school bus was stopped by two masked Taliban guards. One of the guards boarded the bus and asked, “Who is Malala?”. Two of her friends looked in her direction giving who she was away. The guard then proceeded to fire three shots at her with the intent of killing her. Yousafzai was in critical condition, but was then taken to a hospital in England where she underwent multiple surgeries and eventually made a full recovery.

The Taliban’s attempt to assassinate Malala Yousafzai was motivated by their need to deny women’s rights. They were threatened by Malala’s growing support and influence she had on people to give women more rights. The Taliban were very keen to deprive women of their rights and equality because their interpretation of Sharia law allowed them to do so. So when Yousafzai, a girl who was educated her whole life, felt the need to advocate for change when the Taliban denied girls the right to education, the Taliban needed to get rid of her. The Taliban’s goal to eliminate a threat to their mission and stop the spread of her influence ultimately backfired. Their assassination attempt created an outpour of support for Yousafzai and her cause and made way for reforms in Pakistan. Over 2 million people signed a petition for the right to education and the National Assembly approved their first Right to Free and Compulsory Education Bill in Pakistan. As Malala said during her United Nations Speech, “The terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions, but nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear, and hopelessness died. Strength, power, and courage was born.”
