The Jay Treaty of 1794, named after its main representative John Jay, was part of maintaining the country’s neutrality in regard to the French Revolution and the British-French conflict of the time. Negotiated between the United States and Britain, it stated that the British would leave the American western frontier even though Jay’s original goal was for the British to agree to stop the harassing of American ships by seizing them or forcing their sailors to enlist in the British army. It was unpopular at the time it was ratified.
