9 sett 1512 anni - Encomienda System (1512) and New Laws of 1542
Descrizione:
As the Spanish became an economic power, they depended on Native Americans and later enslaved Africans to be laborers. After some time people like priest Bartolome de Las Casas became an advocate for the Indians. With his persuasion the King institued the New Laws of 1542 in which ended Indian slavery and the encomienda system. Despite his efforts the king was pressured to repeal some of the new laws thus demonstrating how the social structure during the colonization of the Americas depended on what the conservative Spaniards wanted.
