Frederick Jackson Turner, in response to the closing of the frontier, wrote a paper named “The significance of the Frontier in American History”, in which he proposed that the 300 years spent in the frontier would morph American culture to be based on the idea of independence, it broke down class distinction, fostered political and social democracy, caused Americans to be inventive and innovative, and changed their opinion of the waste of resources. He believed that the U.S. could end up following in the steps of Europe with strife over class distinction and social conflict. The giving of land to people would lower the levels of discontent harmlessly.
