An act of 1882 in which people were being given 160 acres of Great Plains land if they stayed on it for 5 years. This would cause 500,000 families to move into the Great Plains because of the Homestead Act. Problems would arise with the environment of the Great Plains. It was difficult to till, had incredibly variable temperatures, Scarce water and wood. The lack of wood would be solved by the invention of barbed wire, wells would be drilled, and “dry farming”, a method in which people would deeply till the land, was adopted.
