Farming became a staple in the new settlements of the west. Thousands of farms, ranches, and towns surfaced along vast open territorial spaces. Several acts enacted such as the Homestead Act of 1862 allowed for many the chance to farm and develop land of their own. This came with its difficulties of course. Having to live off the land amid crop disease and severe weather along these prairie lands proved harsh for many that were not experienced. Those surviving settlements would later become major cities that would eventually become interconnected via the new transcontinental railroad.
