1 gen 1880 anni - Party Patronage: Stalwarts, Halfbreeds, Mugwumps
Descrizione:
At this time politics was solely based on winning elections, holding office, and providing government jobs to the party that they were faithful to. For instance this was displayed in New York Bike Republican senator Roscoe Conkling who became a powerful leader of his party by choosing and deciding all the people who would be appointed to powerful jobs in the Republican ranks. His supporters and him were known as stalwarts and the rivals were known as half-breeds who were led by James G Blaine. Also any Republicans who did not decide to participate in this patronage game would become ridiculed as mugwumps for sitting on the fence.
