1 nov 1735 anni - The Zenger Case(NAT)

Descrizione:

At the time newspaper printers were at risk of being jailed if any article offended public authorities. In 1735, John Peter Zeneger published an article about New York’s royal government criticizing it for all the things it did wrong. His lawyer, Andrew Hamilton argued that what he wrote about the government was true, but it did not matter what the article said because anything injuring a governor's reputation was illegal. Ignoring the English law Zeneger was appealed and this became a large step towards freedom of the press due to more and more newspaper publishers taking more risks when publishing articles.
