Descrizione:
Education at this time was very limited and was only directed towards males because women were strictly trained for housework. Elementary Education varied from colony to colony, in the south parents gave their children whatever education they could because it was unavailable. In the middle colonies, schools were either church sponsored or private, teachers would often stay with the families of their students. In the North, towns with over 50 families had to establish primary schools for boys, and towns with over 100 had to make grammar schools for boys as well. In New England the first tax-supported schools were created. Higher education at first was sectarian which meant that they promoted doctrines of particula religious groups. The Puritans first founded Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1636 because they wanted to give candidates for ministry a proper education. Also William and Mary in Virginia and Yale in Connecticut. Also the Great awakening prompted 5 more colleges to be opened. Ministry was the only profession that had a widespread respect among the common people. The ministers were often the only educated people in small towns. Finally, lawyers were often viewed as talkative troublemakers and were not very common in the 1600s. During the 1700s legal problems became more and more complex and people began to feel the need for more expert assistance. They began to get more respect when they began to argue for colonial rights and John Adams, James Otis, and Patrick Henry werem 3 lawyers whose arguments provided the intellectual underpinning of the American Revolution.
