Southern whites created a secret society to scare blacks and white reformers, while the Republicans controlled state governments. The Ku Klux Klan was founded by a former confederate general, Nathan B Forrest, and burned black owned buildings and murdered free African American people so that they did not have the right to vote. Congressed passed the Force Acts that gave the power to stop the Ku Klux Klan violence.
