Another religious group was formed, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints or Mormons, founded by Joseph Smith in 1830. Smith gathered a following in New York and moved to Ohio, then Missouri, and finally Illinois. While in Illinois, the Mormon leader was murdered by a local mob. To escape persecution, the Mormons fled to the far western frontier and settled along the banks of the Great Salt Lake, this new place was known as the Great Zion to Mormons. Their practice of polygamy however arose hostility from the U.S. Government.
