Following World War II, Germany was built into different sectors. East Berlin was controlled by Soviets, while West Berlin was controlled by the allied forces (minus Russia). Germany themselves built the wall to prevent East Berlinians from fleeing to the West. The Berlin wall was a symbolic division not just between the citizens of Berlin, but of the U.S. and Russia.
