Dear Journal:
It is early morning in Bluffton, South Carolina. Pa had just gon to check on the slaves and mama is in the kitchen yelling at Archie(my brother) for helping out one of the house slaves. News around town was that the North is trying to make the slaves free. And ever since then Pa and Ma have been really hard on the people on the plantations. Everyone has been so stressed because of the Missouri compromise. I cant really tell you that well what it is but I overheard Ma and Pa saying that it was a foolish move. And that people should have just voted not to free any slaves. Archie is only 4 years older than me and he had told me that the Compromise was just that territory North of the 36° 30´ latitude line was free and under they were slave states. Us in South Carolina are a slave state so i don't really see the problem but what do i know i'm just a kid. Just like my Pa said Some people where happy but I just know that something bad is gonna come from this. I don't really understand everything at this time but i just don't like to look at the slaves. i think its wrong for Ma and Pa to treat them like this but they tell me all the time that these people need us to do the right thing. They tell me all the time that these people are animals but i just don't see how. They act just like us not once has one been mean to me. But that's just maybe because Ma and pa scares them and they think i will harm them as well. Honestly i just wasn't a friend I've been lonely my whole life. And they seem so friendly maybe i should try to make a friend but i know Pa wont allow it. We are not the richest people in the land but we are close to it. I get private tutoring so that's why i don't have any friends. I guess i will never know what having a friend feels like but oh well.
