Race tensions in LA increased with the growing Mexican American population and white Americans. Mexican Americans increasingly expressed ethnic pride and identity and Mexican teenagers (some were gang members, but not all) started wearing zoot suits, which erelong jackets and baggy pants. White sailors invaded Mexican neighborhoods and started attacking zoot suit wearing teens who fought back in four days of violence. In response, LA city council banned zoot suits in public. This was another example of the continued racism, Mexicans faced in the U.S.
