An informal alliance among three prominent politicians in the late Roman Republic: Gaius Julius Caesar, Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, and Marcus Licinius Crassus. Was formed to challenge effectively the power of the Senate. In addition to political powers, the First Triumvirate gave themselves lands to rule over, with Crassus taking Syria, Caesar taking Illyrica and Gaul (both Cisalpine Gaul and Transalpine Gaul), and Pompey taking Spain.
