After the dissolution of the Insurgent Army in January 1920, the
Reds occupied Nikopol and appointed a certain P. Lebed who,
with his own squad, began shooting Makhnovist commanders
and breaking up the Makhnovist Kontrrazvedka of the 2nd Azov
Corps. However its chief, Golik, was able to save himself. The
whole winter and spring of 1920 he, together with his staff, hid in
the underground in Gulai-Polye.
