5 magg 1941 anni - The Beginning Of The Federal Government's Use Of Eskimo Identification Tags 1941

Descrizione:

In 1935 a proposal was made requiring inuits to wear “tags stamped with unique identification numbers”. In 1941 the government of Canada began the act. The tags were leather coin-sized disks and read “ Eskimo Identification Canada”. The program was set out because of the inability of an increasing number of white people to understand, pronounce, and spell Inuit names. Canada issued this program in order for better record keeping to help administer medical and social government programs. Some of the Inuit felt humorous about the fact that it became essential to have “tags”, while some felt very negatively especially younger generations who connected the tags to greater injustice like forced relocations, residential schools. Many commented on how the government didn't think of them as people and treated them with neglect. People have PTSD from wearing tags and from being seen as just a number in the eyes of the government. The Inuit also felt the loss of their culture and language. Furthermore, the Inuit were being forced to absorb a governmental act that did not recognize nor respect their cultural norms just because “surnames were not a part of Inuit culture”. Among the Metis, Aboriginal and Inuit; Inuit were the only ones to be found under the need of having tags
