Women's involvement and presence in the skateboard subculture challenges traditional gender logic. Many female skateboarders are compelled to accept some aspects of femininity while simultaneously resisting other dominant discourses surrounding femininity. This paper focuses on explaining why women are more predominately involved in snowboarding, while they are minimally participating in skateboarding. Informed by feminist theory, this research divulges the differential treatment of female skateboarders, through examining young women's and men's involvement in the recreational activities of skateboarding and snowboarding. As an "insider" within the skateboard and snowboard subculture, fifteen in-depth interviews were conducted with male and female skateboarders and snowboarders and three females who identify with the subculture, but are not active participants. The analysis of the interview data led to the construction of two models of gendered involvement in skateboarding and snowboarding. These frameworks will be presented and discussed to outline the different phases of involvement in the two recreational activities. The models of gendered involvement serve to highlight the similarities and discrepancies among men and women in terms of motivation for participation, barriers to participation, societal and subcultural treatment, media portrayal, and the benefits and ramifications of involvement.
