Known as Victory over Japan day, Japan’s formal surrender took place aboard the U.S.S. Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay. It was an emotional and triumphant day for the United States, who had wanted revenge on Japan since Pearl Harbor. Japan surrendered as a result of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
