U.S forces invaded the Japanese occupied island of Iwo Jima, an island 750 miles of the coast of Japan. All but around 200 of the 21,000 Japanese forces were killed, and 7,000 U.S marines were killed. However, the military ended up not making use of the thought to be strategic island.
