In October 1867, Charles Warren entered the Gihon Spring and began to investigate the underground tunnels surrounding the spring. There he discovered a vertical shaft that led to a manmade tunnel connecting the spring, at the foot of the hill, to the hill’s peak. He proposed that the system was intended to connect the city’s residents with the spring, and the water was drawn from this shaft. Today, this shaft is known as Warren’s Shaft, named for its discoverer, though it is now known that this shaft was not used for pumping water, but that the tunnel did indeed connect the city with its water source.
