John D. Rockefeller was a successful capitalist in the Gilded Age. He is widely considered to be the richest American of all time. He worked together with Vanderbilt for rail shipping, and used horizontal integration to gain a monopoly over oil (buying out competitors). He founded Standard Oil in 1870.
