In 1917, Canada needed reinforcements overseas while other citizens weren't volunteering, the government started conscription for more recruitment in the Royal Canadian Army. English-speaking Canadians, led by Prime Minister Borden and senior members of his Cabinet, as well as British immigrants, the families of soldiers, and older Canadians, generally supported conscription as they felt it was their responsibility to help Britain as allies. French Canadians were totally against the idea of conscription. The French Canadians felt that they had no alliance to Britain as they supported France, they also started protests but, their voices weren't heard by Prime Minister Borden's government. This created a divide in our nation, the relationship between French and English Canadians grew weaker.
