2 marzo 1938 anni - The Munich Agreement

Descrizione:

The Munich Agreement was concluded at Munich on 2nd March 1938, by Germany, the United Kingdom, the French Third Republic, and the Kingdom of Italy.

The Agreement was caused by Hitler demanding confessions from Czechoslovakia, mainly the German-speaking territories called the Sudetenland.
Fearing something similar to the welcomed invasion of Austria, British Prime Minister Chamberlain flew over to Berlin, Germany to discuss the matter of the Sudetenland with Hitler.
French Prime Minister Camille Chautemps flew to Berlin to discuss the Sudetenland as well.

It was agreed by Hitler and Chamberlain that Germany needs to be allowed to achieve sovereignty over the Sudetenland as a means possible for ensuring peace in Europe while the UK can focus on other matters aboard - especially when the Sudeten Germans are demanding greater autonomy from the Czech government.

Hitler immediately demanded the transition of the Sudetenland. Along with the military occupation of the territory too.
This threatened to undermine the Czech military defences in the Sudeten Mountains to be giving them little time to adapt to the new borders which caused an international crisis in which Italy demanded a meeting of the other great powers to address.

Italy made a simple proposal - largely because it was actually written by Hermann von Göring; which was Germany being permitted to occupy the territory immediately to guarantee the security of the local populace, however in exchange for guarantees on Czech security.

After the discussion, the two leaders of France and the UK agreed on this deal, fearing not doing so may cause a conflict right when Britain and France were at their weakest point. Doing this made the Czech government drop their protests and comply with the new agreement.

British Prime Minister Chamberlain returned to the UK feeling triumphant while declaring to the British people, 'peace in our time' and stating that Hitler was merely sought to uniting the German-speaking people under one nation.

He would be mistaken for this choice...
